Acute lower back pain refers to pain that has been present for less than 6 weeks. Sometimes people will report that the pain started following a specific activity, such as digging in the garden or lifting a heavy box, others can relate it to a period of inactivity, such as a prolonged spell of sitting or bed rest, whilst just as many are unable to identify any sort of trigger!

The good news is that, if this is your first episode of back pain, it is likely to settle of its own after a few days. However, 15-20% of people find that their symptoms persist beyond this time and others may experience a “flare” of pain intermittently in the future.

If you choose to seek treatment at Body Works at this time, we will investigate which structures are causing your pain, and look for factors that may maintain your current symptoms. Our treatment strategies will include techniques to help reduce pain, improve mobility (if it is restricted) and promote return to your normal function as quickly as possible.

As with all our spinal consultations, we will add in a good dollop of advice and teach you back exercises to improve general spinal health, because this is known to help prevent your symptoms recurring!
