OUR SATURDAY PHYSIOTHERAPY CLINIC
I’m excited to announce that we now have a regular Saturday physiotherapy clinic – run by Fergus, one of our skilled musculoskeletal team. When not at Body Works, Fergus’ other work includes a role within A&E. This means he’s is a whizz at the assessment and management of acute/recent injuries, such as sports-related traumas. In addition, Fergus has a special interest in the treatment of people with hand and wrist problems. But like all of the team here at Body Works, Fergus treats all conditions relating to the musculo-skeletal system, such as back and neck pain, shoulder problems and ligament sprains.

BALANCE MATTERS
At Body Works we’re on a mission to reduce falls and the detrimental effects they have on people’s well being. Around 1 in 3 adults over 65 and half of people over 80 will have at least one fall a year. Suffering a fracture or getting a serious injury from a fall can be very difficult to recover from.
Thankfully most falls don’t result in serious injury, but they can cause loss of confidence and independence. This is something we see regularly at our clinic, so we’re well practiced in helping people to recover their independence, strength and movement. Ideally though, our skills are best used to help prevent falls in the first place.
Improving our balance is one key way to reduce our risk of falling.
Here is a simple balance exercise to do at home:
Standing on one leg –
Stand next to a wall or kitchen counter top, or something solid that you can use if you lose your balance.
Now lift one leg off the floor, by bending it at the knee.
You are now balancing on one leg.
Do this for 20 or 30 seconds and use your hand for support as little as possible. Repeat on the other leg. Keep a note of how much better you get over time.
Too easy? Do the same exercise, as above, with your eyes closed
Daily balance practice does reduce the risk of falling!
Consistency is key! Perhaps link this practice with a daily activity you already do – such as cleaning your teeth or making a cuppa. This will make your practice easier to remember and do regularly.

Following on from last week we wanted to give you more information about what a typical pelvic health appointment involves.
We understand that many people feel nervous about coming in for a physiotherapy appointment for the first time, especially if that appointment is to see a pelvic health physiotherapist. We know that talking about topics such as bladder issues, constipation, pelvic pain or painful intercourse can feel embarrassing, but these are the subjects that a pelvic health physiotherapist talks about all the time.
Pelvic health physiotherapists are experts at putting you at ease, allowing sensitive subjects to be chatted through professionally and with care and compassion.
If you think that pelvic health physiotherapy may be helpful for yourself, a loved one or a friend we have recorded a short interview which talks about what a typical appointment is like. We’d like to reassure you that all appointments are private, confidential and that you are in control the whole time,. We will never ask you to talk about a subject that you don’t want to or perform any part of an assessment without your consent.
When you book a pelvic health appointment at Body Works, we want you to feel prepared and confident about the process. So here’s what to expect during your visit:
- Discussion: We’ll discuss your medical history, symptoms, and concerns in a comfortable, private environment.
- Assessment: This may include evaluating your posture, movement patterns, and pelvic floor muscle function. Don’t worry—we’ll explain everything step by step and ensure you’re comfortable throughout.
- Personalised Treatment Plan: Based on the assessment findings and your treatment goals, we’ll provide clinical recommendations and a tailored programme that may include a combination of exercise, breath work, lifestyle advice, and/or manual therapy in order to address your specific needs. We’ll let you know if we think we’re not the right people to best help you, or if you require different medical management and can guide you when seeking other appropriate medical or wellbeing support.
- Goal planning: Our aim is to empower you with the knowledge and tools to manage your symptoms and improve your quality of life.
