This month’s newsletter is inspired by my recent trip to New Zealand over Easter – reconnecting with family and pushing my body in ways it hadn’t been challenged for years. Let’s just say my knees are still reminding me about the Tongariro Crossing! That stunning and steep hike – complete with views of Mount Ngauruhoe – was unforgettable (Check out the photo at the top of the newsletter!).
It got me thinking about how we prepare our bodies for travel and adventure, especially long-haul flights and those & “once-in-a-lifetime” holiday experiences. So, this issue is packed with practical tips to help you stay comfortable, mobile, and strong while you’re away.”

Whether you’re off to Bali or Boston, hours on a plane can leave you feeling stiff, swollen, or at risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Here’s how to reduce those risks:
Hydration is key – The research is clear: keeping well-hydrated helps your circulation and reduces fatigue.
Compression socks – These can support venous return and help minimise swelling.
Scarf hack – Loop a scarf around the tray table arms to create a little foot hammock. It helps keep your feet elevated and reduces pressure (thank you Linda for that piece of advice!).
Exercise – Movement is medicine. Our latest video shows a series of standing exercises you can do at the airport or on the plane (I did these in Doha Airport – then recorded them back in the clinic): it also cleared my family away for a while, their embarrassment was palpable… and I had some peace and quiet!
Prefer to stay seated?
Next week we will add a “seated travel class” to the On-Demand Pilates library (this standing recording will also be added) – so if you have an “On-Demand” membership look out for this class too. Both classes are designed to keep you moving while travelling!
If you’d like access to our complete On-demand library of over 100 Physiotherapy led exercise, rehabilitation and Pilates classes, email us at pilates@thebodydyworks.co.uk
This library is designed to to use either as a stand-a-lone exercise programme or to boost your other Pilates or physiotherapy rehabilitation exercises, in order to help you feel stronger, tackle aches and pains, and support you with your long-term health goals
Planning a hike? Want to swim, cycle or climb while you’re away? Don’t let niggles or lack of preparation hold you back. We’re here to help you prepare for the kind of movement you don’t normally do at home. Strengthening ahead of time helps you get the most from your experience (and avoid those “knees-still-remember” moments!).
One of my most unusual – and favourite – holiday goals was helping a client train to squat… not for weights, but to visit gorillas in Rwanda! You have to look subservient to them in their habitat, and squatting is the respectful way to do it. I’m happy to report: she squatted, met gorillas, and returned unharmed. Job done!
If you’re unsure how to prepare your body for your next holiday, just ask – we love these kinds of goals
